WHO TO CONTACT FOR QUESTIONS AND CONCERNS?
DISCOP CLUB is an online marketplace designed for the comfort of acquisition executives (A.K.A Buyers) servicing Africa and the Middle East. With a combined population of 1.5 billion, Africa and the Middle East are reasserting themselves as the world’s most coveted entertainment and media marketplaces.
Right-holders can showcase their programs, adaptation rights and projects available for distribution in Francophone and Anglophone/Lusophone SubSaharan Africa, as well as Northern Africa and the Middle East. Buyers from these regions are invited to screen the content displayed on the platform, and then connect with DISCOP CLUB ‘personal shoppers’ who will prepare the grounds for remote or face-to-face meetings with right-holders.
Africa and the Middle East still account for a very marginal share in B2B content trading, both in volume and in value. However, these regions anticipate dynamic growth in the near future. Strong smartphone penetration, the falling cost of data and rising disposable income will put hundreds of millions of potential content consumers in play, 70% or them under the age of 25.
Both DISCOP entities cover Sub-Saharan Africa, Northern Africa and the Middle East.
DISCOP CLUB is an extension of the DISCOP brand that has been servicing the television industry for more than 25 years through the organization of the DISCOP Markets.
While the DISCOP Markets are face-to-face B2B gatherings taking place at specific dates and locations, DISCOP CLUB is an online marketplace facilitating the international commerce of film and television content all year round. In other words, DISCOP CLUB expands the range of “deal-making” services offered by the DISCOP Markets and offers to new customers or non-DISCOP Markets participants an option to access the African and MENA marketplaces.
In Africa and in the MENA regions, there’s an expanding demographic of film, television and digital content. 90% of these buyers belong to a younger tech-savvy generation who spend 35% of their time on the phone. They have a different approach to buying content than their older peers. They multi-task, hunt for bargains and are more global, more entrepreneurial and bigger on individuality. To stay ahead of the curve and boost productivity, this new breed of buyers increasingly use their pc, tablets and smartphones to work and to source new content.
DISCOP CLUB will provide them with a year-round, 24/7 online video platform with greater personalized attention and a higher level of matchmaking to make their buying experience more convenient.
The television content export industry is worth $16 billion (2016). 80% of international television content trade is generated by 50 “developed” countries, most of it during 4 major annual industry gatherings: the MIPCOM and MIPTV markets held in Cannes (France); the NATPE convention held in Miami (USA); and the LA SCREENINGS held informally all over Los Angeles and Burbank (USA).
140 “emerging” countries representing 75% of the world’s population generate 20% of the industry’s global export revenues. A vast portion of these transactions with “emerging” countries takes place during the DISCOP Markets.
Fast-developing world regions are now the defining feature of the international television content industry, one that has grown fourfold in the past 25 years servicing an ever-growing number of broadcasters and other distribution platforms operating in the 190 countries that are open for business.
Based on the registered participants at the DISCOP MARKETS, we’ve noticed the fast-rising presence of global, regional and local industry players in Africa and in the Middle East, and the growing need for multi-platform entertainment content.
Africa’s and MENA’S entertainment and media sectors are expected to grow by 35% in the next five years. Many reports anticipate that by 2021, 45% of the 170 million television homes in Africa will have access to pay-tv services (75 million) while the number of pay-tv subscribers will increase by 74% and hit 40.89 million by 2023 – up from 23.49 million at the end of 2017 – of which 20.89 million of which will be satellite TV and 17.53 million digital terrestrial television customers.
Pay-tv revenue is forecast to climb to $6.64 billion by 2023 (vs. $4.75 billion in 2017.)
Challenging traditional models of television viewing, the launch of new digital streaming platforms like VOD (Video on Demand) and OTT (Over the Top) is slowly but surely fragmenting a marketplace where television content becomes more readily accessible.
Across the industry, whether in film, television, or digital, today’s ever-changing entertainment landscape is more complex, changing, and fragmented than ever. And it also covers more of the planet than ever, with opportunities lurking in unusual or as yet “undiscovered” places.
To survive and thrive, film and television content sellers - who have incredibly hectic lives, juggling marketplace research, sales calls, business trips, follow-up efforts and social lives and families - must spot those up-and-coming global opportunities, while adjusting to quickly evolving consumer habits and tastes, as well as to a variety of unforeseen challenges: travel safety, and last but not least, weakening economies in “developed” marketplaces.
The current glut of new movies, television shows and adaptation rights available for global licensing has also created a huge challenge for the industry.
Unless you have been traveling across Africa to meet with buyers yourself, or you have been attending DISCOP Markets, it’s impossible to get an updated listing of qualified and reliable buyers.
We have been organizing the DISCOP Markets in Africa for more than 10 years (in Senegal, Ghana, Rwanda, Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania, Côte d’Ivoire). We know the important buyers on a personal level because they attend our markets. Plus, our management team constantly updates the database and maintains Buyer relationships through year-round phone correspondence.
